History
Nothing about Balkan history is straightforward. Yet in this part of the world, events
that are centuries old factor heavily in the national consciousness and public dis-
course. State boundaries have changed continuously through the ages, so what is now
Monte-negro has many distinct histories. This chapter focuses on the story of
Montenegro and its direct antecedents; the history of the coastal regions is covered in
more depth within their respective chapters.
The Romans took advantage of the beautiful Adriatic coastline to build lavish seaside villas complete
with mosaic floors, the remains of which are displayed in both Risan and Petrovac. Other Roman ruins
can be seen at the site of Doclea, on the northern edge of Podgorica.
