In any case, check the weather forecast before you set out, stick to the tracks, and pre-
pare for rain and sudden drops in temperature. A compass could be a lifesaver.
Durmitor
and the Tara Canyon
by Branislav Cerović (€12 from the Visitors Centre) is a great re-
source for mountaineers and serious hikers.
Skiing
( Jan-Mar)
Even in the height of summer
Savin Kuk
(2313m), 5km from Žabljak, wears a
pocket of snow. On its slopes you'll find Durmitor's main ski centre. Its 3.5km run starts
from a height of 2010m and is best suited to advanced skiers. At the time of writing, the
ski lift operator was bankrupt, the business failed to sell at auction and a scramble was on
to find someone to take on the lease. Hopefully by the time you're reading this the situ-
ation will be resolved.
On the outskirts of Žabljak, near the bus station,
Javorovača Ski Centar
( 067-800 971)
has
a gentle 300m slope that's good for kids and beginners, and a year-round restaurant.
One of the big attractions for skiing in the national park is the cost: day passes are
around €15, weekly passes €70, and ski lessons cost between €10 and €20. You can rent
ski and snowboard gear from
Sport Trade
(
052-361 010; Vuka Karadžića 18, Žabljak;
8am-1pm &
3-8pm)
for around €10 per day.
Canyoning
Just south of the national park, near Šavnik, the remarkable 2.7km-long
Nevidio Canyon
on
the Komarnica River is at points only metres wide, earning it the name
nevidio
(invis-
ible). It's extremely beautiful but dangerous; July and August are the safest months to ex-
plore it, and then only in the company of professional guides. Canyoning expeditions
generally take about three to four hours and participants should be able to swim and have
a high level of fitness.
Anitra (

) organises expeditions out of Nikšić (price on application), as does
Summit (

) out of Žabljak (€120 per person including lunch, minimum two
people).
