Northern Mountains
Why Go?
The mountainous north's premier attractions are its three national parks. Durmitor com-
bines soaring peaks with the depths of the Tara Canyon, allowing for excellent skiing in
winter and rafting in summer. Biogradska Gora shelters large swathes of ancient forest
within the protecting arms of the Bjelasica mountains. If you're after something more ex-
treme, serious mountain-lovers can take on the lofty reaches of Prokletije, the Accursed
Mountains.
Locals will try to dissuade you from going anywhere other than Kolašin and Žabljak as
these are the only towns that have a significant level of tourist infrastructure. This serves
to give an off-the-beaten-track feel to almost any other place you might choose to explore.
You don't need to be an action hero to experience the beauty of this untamed region.
Just hire a car for a few days and let the back roads lead you somewhere unexpected.
When to Go
» In January and February spend your days skiing and your nights feasting in front of an
open fire.
» July and August have the best hiking weather, with average Durmitor temperatures in
the low 20s (Celsius).
» Watch the forest explode in colour in September and October as autumn hits Biogradska
Gora.
