Getting There & Away
Cetinje is on the main Budva-Podgorica highway and can also be reached by a glorious
back road from Kotor via Lovćen National Park. The bus station (Trg Golootočkih Žrtava) is ba-
sically derelict but buses still stop outside, including regular services from Herceg Novi
(€7, 2½ hours), Budva (€4, 40 minutes) and Podgorica (€4, 30 minutes).
TOP OF CHAPTER
Lake Skadar National Park Скадарско Језеро
The Balkans' largest lake, dolphin-shaped Skadar has its tail and two-thirds of its body in
Montenegro and its nose in Albania. Covering between 370 and 550 sq km (depending
on the time of year), it's one of the most important reserves for wetland birds in Europe.
The endangered Dalmatian pelican nests here along with 256 other species, including a
quarter of the global population of pygmy cormorants. You might spot whiskered terns
making their nests on the water lilies. At least 48 species of fish lurk beneath its smooth
surface, the most common of which are carp, bleak and eel. Mammals within the park's
confines include otters, wolves, foxes, weasels, moles and groundhogs.
On the Montenegrin side, an area of 400 sq km has been protected by a national park
since 1983. It's a blissfully pretty area encompassing steep mountains, hidden villages,
historic churches, clear waters and floating meadows of water lilies.
Rijeka Crnojevića Ријека Црнојевића
POP 180
The northwestern end of Lake Skadar thins into the serpentine loops of the Rijeka Crno-
jevića (Crnojević River) and terminates near the pretty village of the same name. It's a
charming, tucked-away kind of place, accessed by side roads that lead off the Cetin-
je-Podgorica highway.
