Beaches
Mala Plaža MAP GOOGLE MAP may be a fine grin of a cove but it's a little hard to see the
beach under all that suntanned flesh in July and August. You are better off strolling
southeast where a succession of rocky bays offers clear water and a little more room to
breathe.
Each beach has a commercial license, with attendent seasonal beach bars and eateries.
If you value your eardrums, avoid those with names like Ibiza and Aquarius and head
somewhere like Sapore di Mare MAP GOOGLE MAP where you can either plant yourself on a
concrete terrace or find a patch of grass under the pines. Lady Beach 'Dada' MAP GOOGLE MAP
(admission €1.50) , true to its unusual name, has a women-only policy, while a section of the
beach in front of the Hotel Albatros MAP

The ancient Stari Grad overlooking Mala Plaža is still largely residential and somewhat
dilapidated - a legacy of the 1979 earthquake. This is part of its charm - this Old Town
really does feel old, a fact reinforced by its uneven cobblestones and the paucity of street
lighting at night. One suspects that vampires lurk in forgotten basements...
A steep slope leads to the Upper Gate MAP GOOGLE MAP , where just inside the walls
there's a small museum MAP GOOGLE MAP (admission €1; 9am-8pm Tue-Sun) containing Roman
and Ottoman artefacts. On the site is a 1510 church that was converted to a mosque in
1693; you can still see the ruined minaret. Just outside the museum is a fountain MAP
