In-Depth Information
Čanj Чањ
Located roughly halfway between Petrovac and Bar, Čanj has a long beach, clear waters
and a scrappy strip of beach bars to keep the local teenagers and regional holidaymakers
entertained.
Just around the headland, Kraljičina Plaža (Queen's Beach) is an appealing curve of pink-
ish sand that can only be reached by boat. Taxi boats from Čanj operate in the peak sea-
son; some offer set departures from Bar for as little as €3.

Bar Бар
POP 13,500
Dominated by Montenegro's main port and a large industrial area, Bar is unlikely to be
on anyone's list of holiday highlights but nonetheless is a handy transport hub welcoming
trains from Belgrade and ferries from Italy. More interesting are the ruins of Stari Bar
(Old Bar) found in the mountains behind.
Unlike the northern part of the coast, which remained largely under the rule of Venice
and then Austria, the areas from Bar south spent 300 years under Turkish control. From
here on you'll start to notice more mosques and Ottoman-looking buildings, although not
in modern Bar itself, which was only founded in 1908.

Beaches
With a large industrial port and marina on its doorstep, Bar's City Beach MAP is not the
most appealing option for swimming. Heading north, Šušanj Beach MAP is popular with
Serbian holidaymakers. Beat the crowds in the succession of rocky coves that follow;
they are perfect for snorkelling and sheltered swimming. If you're concerned about the
Speedos chafing, you can go the full monty at a stony bay just before the rustic ruins of
the 11th-century Benedictine monastery of the Mother of God of Ratac (Bogorodica Ratac).
Destroyed by the Turks in 1571, the remains of its chapel now have a congregation con-
sisting of wild figs and the occasional old lady in black.
