time of research, being restored. Make your way through the olive grove to the dig site
where you will need to watch your footing.
Kastio
This small Venetian fortress by the harbour offers gorgeous views of the beach and the
dramatic diagonal stratification of the limestone cliffs melting into the turquoise water
below. An interesting socialist realist bas-relief remembering the 'socialist revolution' is
partly obscured in the foliage.
FORTRESS
Red Commune Memorial House
(Crvena Komuna; 033-404 877; www.crvenakomuna.webs.com ; 8am-2pm & 7-10pm) Petrovac
became the first communist-run municipality in the Adriatic following an electoral vic-
tory in 1919. That auspicious event is celebrated in the Red Commune Memorial House
on the waterfront, which contains a modern art gallery and revolutionary museum. The
latter consists mainly of photos and documents without any English captions; it doesn't
get a lot of visitors these days but the bemused staff will unlock it for you upon request.

Katič & Sveta Nedjelja islands
Directly in front of the town beach is what looks like one sheer rocky outcrop capped
with a church and a stand of trees but is actually two islets - Katič and Sveta Nedjelja
(Holy Sunday). Holy Sunday Church is said to have been built in gratitude by a Greek
sailor who was shipwrecked there. The current church replaces one destroyed in the 1979
earthquake.

CHURCH
Elijah's Church
(Crkva Sv Ilije; Nika Anđusa bb) Dedicated to the Old Testament prophet Elijah, this Orthodox
church is similar in age to nearby St Thomas', dating from the 14th or 15th century. Un-
like St Thomas', it's often open, revealing some beautiful old icons.

Petrovac Night
( Aug) Free fish, wine and beer, majorette parades, performances by Eurovision con-
testants… who could ask for anything more? It's held on the last Friday and Saturday in
August. Yes, that's two nights - but who's counting.
