Around Budva
Jaz Beach Плажа Јаз
The blue waters and broad sands of Jaz Beach look spectacular when viewed from high
up on the Tivat road. While it's not built up like Budva and Bečići, the beach is still lined
with loungers, sun umbrellas and noisy beach bars. Head down the Budva end of the
beach for a little more seclusion.
Parking will set you back €2.50 and camping is possible (per adult/child/tent/car/cara-
van €3/1/2.50/1/3), but the facilities are extremely basic and the field can get muddy.
Sveti Nikola Свети Никола
Known locally as 'Hawaii', Sveti Nikola is Montenegro's largest island, stretching to
nearly 2km. Fallow deer wander about on this uninhabited green spot, which is only a
nautical mile away from Budva or Bečići Beach. Its rocky beaches make it a popular des-
tination in summer when taxi boats regularly ferry sunseekers to and fro; expect to pay
about €15 to €20 return from Budva's marina or Bečići. You'll have more chance escap-
ing the tourist hordes, discarded rubbish and blaring pop music if you hire a kayak and
look for a secluded cove on the far side of the island.
Local lore has it that the graves scattered around tiny, whitewashed St Nicholas' Church
(Crkva Sv Nikole) are those of crusaders who died of an unknown epidemic while they
camped nearby. The church itself dates to at least the 16th century but it's rarely open.
PARAGLIDING
Montenegro's dramatic craggy peaks make it an obvious candidate for a paragliding hot spot. The most popular
launch site is at Brajići, 760m above Bečići on the Budva-Cetinje road. The big attraction here is the view over
Budva, Sveti Nikola Island and picture-perfect Sveti Stefan.
Montenegro Adventure Centre ( 067-580 664; www.montenegrofly.com ) , run by a British-qualified
senior paragliding instructor, offers tandem flights for €65, landing on Bečići Beach. Its base is at nearby Lapčići
where it offers accommodation and can also organise rafting, hiking, mountain-biking and diving trips. If you're
already an experienced paraglider, they'll take you up Mt Lovćen where you can make an unforgettable 1740m
descent into the Bay of Kotor itself.
