Mountain Majesty
Much of Montenegro's surface looks like it's been dug up by a giant puppy out of
freshly laid concrete. Montenegro's mountains push up behind each other, filling
most of the land, with only a scattering of sparkling lakes and deeply cut river
canyons to give them breathing space.
Durmitor National Park
A lunar landscape of craggy peaks gives way to high plains and twinkling glacial
lakes known as 'mountain eyes' - this is the second of Montenegro's World Heritage
Sites. The Tara River slices deeply through the Durmitor range, providing one of the
world's most dramatic rafting routes and the nation's most popular active attraction.
Savin Kuk never quite sheds its cap of snow and in the winter its 3.5km run is adored
by enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders.
Biogradska Gora National Park
If you're on the hunt for wood nymphs or satyrs, the 1600 hectares of virgin forest at
the heart of the Bjelasica Mountains would be a good place to start.
Mountaintop Monuments
Seemingly sprouting out of the surrounding cliffs, gleaming white Ostrog Monastery
is the country's spiritual heart for its Orthodox population and a popular pilgrimage
site. At the top of one of Mt Lovćen's highest peaks stands the Njegoš Mausoleum.
This tomb for a national hero echoes the grandeur of the black mountain itself,
through imposing sculpture, solemn architecture and awe-inspiring views.
