Around Tivat
The overly poetically named Ostrvo Cvijeća (Island of Flowers) is accessed by an unlikely
looking road that heads behind the airport and through a rundown area where a former
tourist complex shelters people displaced by the region's most recent wars. At the very
end of the potholed road is the St Michael the Archangel's Monastery (Manastir Sv Arhanđela
Mihaila). This is the area's most historically significant site. The remains of Roman mo-
saics have been discovered here, along with the ruins of a 9th-century church and Bene-
dictine monastery. From the early 13th century St Michael's was the seat of the Orthodox
bishop of Zeta until it was destroyed by the Venetians in 1452. The sweet little 19th-cen-
tury Holy Trinity Church (Crkva Sv Trojice) stands nearby, shaded by trees and protected by
stone walls.
Two more islands stretch out in a line from here but you'll need a boat to access them
(a taxi boat from Tivat or Herceg Novi will do the trick). The larger, heavily forested Sveti
Marko (St Mark's Island) used to be a Club Med and you can still see the huts poking up
through the trees. It's a prime spot with a couple of nice beaches so it's bound to be deve-
loped sometime.
Beyond this the diminutive Gospa od Milosti (Our-Lady-of-Mercy Island) was once the
residence of Kotor's Catholic bishops and is now a convent. A wooden statue of the
Madonna kept in the church is said to have miraculous powers.
