Aristocratic families from Perast, Dobrota and Kotor once built their summer res-
idences at Tivat to take advantage of its sunnier outlook. One of the few survivors is this
500-year-old fortified enclosure with its own Catholic chapel which once belonged to
Kotor's Buća family.
Ask the staff to unlock the solid stone defensive tower, which houses a collection of
Roman bits and bobs. Next door is a well-presented ethnographical museum with fishing
and farming artefacts accompanied by photos of them being put to use. Head upstairs for
beautiful jewellery and folk costumes, including little handbags and parasols that the wo-
men would wear to ape Western fashion. The gallery focuses on modern painting and
sculpture.
Town Park
(Gradski Park) North of the centre the Town Park is a leafy, peaceful retreat, originally laid
out in 1892. At one edge is the headquarters of Tivat's Arsenal football club. We suspect
that the club's North London namesake has nothing to fear if its home ground is anything
to go by.

(Gradska Plaža) You're better off heading to the Luštica Peninsula for a proper swim, but
Tivat does offer a couple of options if you're desperate for dip. Town Beach is a long
concrete platform with a 20m pebbly section right by the main promenade. There's an-
other pebbly beach, Belani MAP
