In-Depth Information
(Crkva Sv Jeronima) The Old Town's main Catholic church (1856) dominates Trg Mića
Pavlovića. It is usually only open during services.

MAP
The bastion at the town's seaward edge was rebuilt by the Venetians during their
110-year stint as overlords (before the Austrians, French, Russians, Montenegrins,
Austro-Hungarians, Serbs, Germans and Italians all had their turns). It's now used for
film screenings on summer nights. In the sea below you can see the ruins of the Citadella , a
victim of a major earthquake that hit the coast in 1979.
FORTRESS
Šetalište Pet Danica
Named after five young women, all called Danica, who died during WWII, this pedestri-
an promenade stretches along the waterfront for over 5km from Igalo to Meljine. It's
lined with summer bars, shops, concrete swimming platforms and the odd rocky cove,
and in places it ducks in and out of tunnels carved through headlands. This was once the
route of a trainline linking Zelenika to Sarajevo via Herceg Novi and Dubrovnik. The old
stone railway station still stands at the foot of the Old Town, although it's long since been
converted into a cafe.

Regional Museum
(Zavičajni muzej; www.rastko.rs/rastko-bo/muzej/ ; Mirka Komnenovića 9; admission €1.50; 9am-6pm Mon-Sat)
Apart from the building itself (which is a fab bougainvillea-shrouded baroque palace
with absolute sea views), the highlight of this little museum is its impressive icon gallery.
MUSEUM
Savina Monastery
(Braće Grakalić bb; 6am-8pm) From its hillside location in the town's eastern fringes, this
peaceful Orthodox monastery enjoys wonderful coastal views. It's dominated by the el-
egant 18th-century Church of the Dormition (Crkva Uspenja Bogorodice , literally 'the
falling into sleep of the Mother of God'), carved from pinkish stone from the island of
Korčula in Croatia. Inside there's a beautiful gilded iconostasis, but you'll need to be de-
murely dressed to enter (no shorts, singlets or bikinis). The smaller church beside it has
the same name but is considerably older (possibly 14th century) and has the remains of
frescoes.
