The juries gave a score of 1-100 to every component for each of the 45 finalists.
The organizing committee then assisted the juries to calculate the final scores. Score
given by each jury for each drawing was the sum of the score of every component
multiplied by its weigh factor. The final score for the drawing was the sum of its
score by all juries. Tables 21.1 and 21.2 illustrate how the final score of the
drawings were obtained.
21.2.4 Verification
For the national competitions, since the children drew at home or school and sent
the result to the organizing committee, it is important to verify that it was indeed the
children who did the drawing. For that purpose, we established a verification
process in which we visited the winning candidates at their homes or schools and
asked the children to draw. There were two things that need to be verified during the
visit:
• That the children really did the drawing by themselves from scratch until
finished.
• That the children really belonged to an age group as informed to us, and thus
were eligible to follow the competition (from the children's date of birth shown
on their birth certificate or official school report).
During the verification process, it is important to make the children as comfort-
able and confident as possible (Fig. 21.8 ). While the children were drawing, we
interviewed the parents or the teachers, and sometimes also the children and their
friends, in order to get some information about the children's background. At this
opportunity we also asked permissions from their parents to publish the winning
drawings and enroll the drawings to the competition held by ICA (Fig. 21.9 ).
