5. Grain yields are often the focus of discussion, but roots and tubers play an important
role in the diets of many of the world's poorer people, and increased yields have also
been observed for them. Livestock, oilseed crops, and fisheries are other important food
sources for which production and productivity have increased during the four decades.
6. One indicator for this “oversupply” was declining real grain prices during much of the
past three decades.
