Optimization . The process of improving the quality and volume of traffic
on a website from search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing. It could be
through natural search results or paid search results.
PC . Personal Computer, just in case for some reason you forgot.
PDF . Portable Document Format, just in case you never bothered to know.
Permission Marketing . The practice of providing consumers with the
possibility to give their conscent to be subscribed to offers from a website
in advance. These offers could include newsletters, promotions, events and
sales provided directly by the website or its partners. Permission market-
ing often takes the form of either checking a box to accept the propositions
(opting in) or unchecking a box to reject the propositions (opting out). The
former is considered to be ethical while the latter is viewed as unethical.
PHP . A widely used scripting language that produces dynamic web pages
with rich content. It can be used on most web servers and operating system
or platform.
Plug-in . The extension of a software to give it more functionalities.
Podcast . A series of digital media files in audio or video formats that are
released episodically online.
Pop-up . Small windows that open automatically on a web page and often
contain advertisements or promotions. They are generally considered as
intrusive and may be blocked using several web options.
QQ/Qzone . A Chinese social networking website that permits users to
connect and collaborate through writing blogs and diaries as well as sharing
files such as photos, videos and news items.
QR code (Quick Response code). This is a code that allows the contents of
a mobile phone to be decoded and downloaded at high speed.
Ranking . The position of a website in the results found on a search engine
using specific associated keywords.
Redirect . A method of temporarily directing website visitors to a URL
address different from the one they originally typed before landing them on
their original intended page. This method is used to demonstrate a high level
of website traffic even if the click on the re-directed website is not a real visit.
Referencing . The collective techniques of increasing the visibility of a
website in search engines. These could include indexing, positioning, rank-
ing and optimization.
