In-Depth Information
Hashtag . This simply means any word that begins with a hash (#) sym-
bol. Hashtags have recently been popularized by Twitter because of Twitter's
limited writing space of only 140 characters, as they help people to associ-
ate their tweets with an event, product or a piece of news without having to
explain the full context.
HTML (Hypertext Mark up Language). This is a web development lan-
guage used to structure text and multimedia documents and to set up hyper-
text links between documents on a website. In general most websites are
either based on HTML and more recently on Flash.
IPAddress (Internet Protocol address). This is a unique address through
which each computer that connects to the internet is identified.
IPR (Internet Penetration Rate). This is a matrix that is used to measure the
effectiveness of the web referencing of a brand based on several keywords
on different search engines. It allows these keywords to be controlled at any
given time and is also used to benchmark the referencing of competitors.
iSmell . A personal scent synthesizer in the form of a computer peripheral
device designed to emit smell when a user visited a website or opened an
email. It functions through being connected on a computer via a USB port.
The device contained a cartridge with over one hundred primary odors,
which could be mixed to replicate natural and man-made odors.
iVillage . A website that is dedicated exclusively to connecting women at
every stage of their lives. Its main features are news and content on health,
beauty, style, fitness, entertainment, fashion, and so on. It also has interactive
content such as message boards and social networking tools for sharing and
collaborating.
Java . This is a programming language expressly designed for use on the
Internet. It was originally designed to be implemented on every computer
system in a standard way, which means running any software written in Java
unmodified on any computer system. This didn't happen due to practical
limitations (no need to go into that) which explains the mixed perceptions of
this program by users.
Keywords . These are pre-identified words and phrases that are integrated
in the background of websites and are used to optimize their visibility and
referencing on search engines and editorial and media websites.
Landing Page . The page on which the user literally “lands” when they
click on a link in an email, a blog post or a banner advert. The landing page
is the starting point for the measurement of the result of the links.
