Crawler . This is a software (sometimes referred to as a robot, a spider or a
bot) that search engine websites use to search the web in order to identify the
most used keywords in different categories for web page classification and
archiving.
CRM (Customer Relationship Management). Marketing programs and tech-
niques that have the objective of ensuring that clients stay loyal. While in
the past the focus was on “managing” clients, currently the objective is to
“engage clients”.
Cross Selling . A means of direct marketing where an online shopper
is given the suggestion and possibility of purchasing products or services
that are complementary to their original choice. In other words, a kind of
enticement (or tick?) to buy more and more. This is sometimes also called
“Collaborative Filtering” and is powered by an application software.
CTC (Click to Call). This is an icon, button or highlighted phone number
placed on a mobile phone, application or website which enables users to trig-
ger a call from a company upon clicking on it. It is often used in customer
care or service support contexts.
Cyber-residents . This is used to refer to the millions of people around the
world who live parallel lives online as offline. If you're reading this topic,
you're probably one of them (sorry, us).
Cyber-policing . A term used to refer to the control of Internet and web
content access by those more powerful than others (think China and North
Korea).
Cyberspace . The entire World Wide Web is also known as the cyberspace.
Cyberworld . See cyberspace.
Cyworld . A South Korea-based online social network that congregates its
users to connect, share, dialogue and interact. It is one of the most active
social networks in the world and also launched an English-language version
based in the USA which closed recently.
Digital Media . This refers to all the media platforms and tools that exist in
the digital and internet contexts.
DHTML . (Dymanic HTML). This is a name for a set of technologies
used to create web pages that update themselves as the user interacts with
the website. The updated elements could be the fonts, positions, layout and
graphics which are rendered more interactive depending on several factors
like the size of the user's screen.
Dot Com Era . A term generally used to refer to the second evolutionary
phase of the web from the mid nineties to the early noughties. This period
