content, period. And no, you don”t need to see this program when online,
and neither do you need to give it a second thought.
Ad Server . A software that manages online adverts by programming the
appearance of the adverts on pre-selected web pages. It also provides the sta-
tistics linked to the advert campaign. Basically it means that when you see a
banner ad on a media website, it is not by accident.
Add On . An extension of software that ensures additional functionalities
on a website.
ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line). This is an internet access pro-
vider that permits high speed connections and facilitates the easy viewing of
rich web content like animations, videos and images. Majority of web users
today connect to the internet via ADSL (except those left behind in 1995).
Adware . A software that can be installed by a website author that ena-
bles the automatic appearance of adverts on the website's pages, based on
prompted keywords that have been pre-purchased by the advertiser. Most
blogs have adware that enables adverts depending on the words used in the
blog's text and they are compensated based on page views and clicks on the
adverts. Many view this as a cool way of making money.
Affiliation . A system of inter-linking websites through other websites
with the goal of web traffic generation and transactions. This approach uses
the placement of web links on “partner websites” to ensure visibility and
increase the probability of visits. The generation of traffic is often compen-
sated through a commission on visits, sales, contacts or other exchanges.
AOL (America Online). One of the early internet companies to provide
people (yes, mainly Americans at first) with access to the Internet and such
features as email, chat rooms, search engines and news content… that is,
until the likes of MSN, Yahoo and Google came along and life became a bit
tougher.
Application . A term generally used to refer to a software or system with
specific functionalities and features. Applications may be web-based, mobile
phone-based (think iPhone apps) or computer-based.
Artificial Intelligence . The use of technology to demonstrate and repro-
duce features and functions that would normally be performed by human
beings and powered by the human brain. For example, robots demonstrate
artificial intelligence as well as several other electronic devices and systems
that make your life easier (and lazier). Did I hear someone mention Google?
Applied Technology . This term is generally used to refer to the integration
of technology in the real and virtual worlds through both application sup-
