Glossary of luxury
online terms
The digital world is full of complicated terms, acronyms and all manners
of jargon that are not easy to understand and nearly impossible to remember.
When you're a creative person, a designer or a business executive, it is even
more tasking to differentiate between ASP, HTML, PHP, DHTML, and the like.
This glossary clarifies some of these terms and also acts as a reference for some
of the words related to luxury in the context of technology and digital media.
Note: This is not a dictionary. The following definitions have been writ-
ten from my understanding of tech jargon as it exists today. Of course you're
welcome to disagreeā€¦
2-D Web Platforms (two-dimensional online platforms). These are basi-
cally websites that enable the viewing of its contents, including text and
images from a static or 180-degree angle. Most websites and online plat-
forms existing today are in 2-D.
2G Mobile Network (second-generation mobile phones). These are phones
that are based mainly on digital voice technology and limited text capabili-
ties. Most mobile phones introduced in the early days of GSM technology
are 2G phones.
3-D Web Platforms (three-dimensional websites). These are online plat-
forms that enable web interaction in a 360-degree format, such as the virtual
immersive world platforms Second Life and Kaneva. 3-D elements may also
be integrated in ordinary websites for product viewing and merchandizing.
The future of the web is likely to be based on 3-D features.
3-G Mobile Network (third-generation mobile phones). These are mobile
phones that feature enhanced multi-media functions in addition to voice,
data, video, and animation. In most cases they offer an integrated web portal
and fast internet access.
Active X . ActiveX controls are small program building blocks created
by Microsoft to distribute applications that work over the Internet through
web browsers. Examples include customized applications for gathering
data, viewing certain kinds of files, and displaying animation. They run on
the computer rather than on the server. To cut the jargon, Active X controls
