In both methods, the precipitated polymers were washed several times with
boiling methanol, and then dried at 100°C for 12 hours in vacuo. The reaction
systems remained homogeneous in NMP. Later, spectroscopic characterizations
confirmed that the cyclodehydration had proceeded completely.

3. PROPERTIES

3.1. Solution properties
The solution properties of polyimides derived from are summarized in

Table 1. The polymers are highly soluble in NMP even at room temperature, but
only slightly soluble in other polar solvents such as m-cresol, N,N-dimethyl-
