While pondering weighty issues can be thought-provoking, the little everyday differences
you encounter while traveling are vividly memorable. As I journeyed through Iran, my
notebook filled with quirky observations. One moment, I'd be stirred by propaganda mur-
als encouraging young men to walk into the blazing sunset of martyrdom. The next, a
woman in a bookstore served me cookies while I browsed. Then, as I was about to leave
without buying anything, she gave me—free of charge—a book I'd admired.
