In-Depth Information
When asked “Who really runs El Salvador?,” most Salvadorans would say simply, “The
Embassy” (as the American Embassy is called here). You can't miss it: It's just above
San Salvador, built upon the ruins of the old pre-Columbian Indian capital.
The primary reason for my 2005 visit to El Salvador was to remember Oscar Romero
on the 25th anniversary of his assassination. Marching with thousands of his followers
through the streets of San Salvador, it was clear to me: Just as Romero prophesized, they
killed him, yet he lives through his people.
