Safe Travel
It's difficult to make generalisations about the personal-safety situation in West Africa. While there may be considerable
risk in some areas, most places are completely safe. It's always important to be aware of potential problems and to keep
your wits about you, but don't be paranoid, and do remember that most travellers experience no problems.
LATEST TRAVEL ADVICE
Lonely Planet's website ( www.lonelyplanet.com ) contains information on what's new, and any new safety reports,
as well as reports from other travellers recounting their experiences while on the road. For Saharan travel, try the
forum on www.sahara-overland.com .
Most governments have travel-advisory services detailing terrorism updates, potential pitfalls and areas to avoid.
Remember, however, that some government travel advisories overstate the risks somewhat and you should read
carefully through the reports to see when actual incidents occurred.
