Environmental Issues
There are many environmental issues confronting West Africa, all of them serious. Defor-
estation and desertification are perhaps the most widespread and urgent of the challenges,
but soil erosion, air and water pollution, wildlife destruction, water scarcity, threats to
coastal and marine ecosystems, overfishing, drought and the impact of cash crops such as
cashews and rubber all pose significant threats to the West African environment.
