National Parks & Wildlife Reserves
West Africa has some outstanding national parks and reserves that provide the last refuge
for the region's wildlife, protected areas amid a growing sea of humanity. Others exist in
name only.
Whatever their status, few West African parks are set up for tourism - national-park of-
fices are rare and trails are often poorly maintained . Visiting these parks usually requires
arranging a visit through a private agency, preferably one from the park's hinterland and
with a local guide to ensure that the proceeds of your visit benefit the local community.
