In-Depth Information
THE SOUTH
The area between Aného, Kpalimé and Atakpamé is one of the most alluring in West
Africa, with a combination of superb beaches, a vast lake, forested hills and numerous wa-
terfalls. If you could only see one place in Togo, this would surely be it.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Agbodrafo & Togoville
On the southern shores of
Lac Togo
(part of the inland lagoon that stretches all the way from
Lomé to Aného),
Agbodrafo
is a popular weekend getaway for frazzled Lomé residents.
Swimming in the lake - croc and bug free - is blissful. It is also a good place to find a
pirogue
(traditional canoe) to
Togoville
, which was the former seat of the Mlapa dynasty and
Togo's historical centre of voodoo.
WORTH A TRIP
COCO BEACH
Past the port and customs east of Lomé is another world - a mellow land of beachfront auberges where you can re-
charge the batteries. The best option on this part of the coast is
Hôtel Coco Beach

Coco Beach; s CFA31,000-39,000, d CFA33,000-62,000; ) , with boardwalks
leading to a great restaurant (meals CFA5500 to CFA7000), a seafront bar, a pool and a private beach with deck-
chairs and
paillotes
(shaded seats) for hire. It's also the safest beach to swim from, thanks to a reef that blocks the
strong undertow. Rooms are bright and comfortable but devoid of character.

East of Ag-
bodrafo, this breezy resort-like venture on the shores of Lac Togo is a reliable choice. The
renovated rooms are spacious, with private patios and sweeping lake views. There's a good
restaurant (mains CFA2000 to CFA6000) overlooking the lake, a swimming pool and a
small beach from where you can swim in the lake.
