LOMÉ
POP 750,000
Togo's capital may be a shadow of its former self, when it was dubbed 'the pearl of West
Africa', but it retains a charm and nonchalance that is unique among West African capitals.
You'll probably appreciate its human scale and unexpected treats and gems: from tasty ma-
quis (informal street-side eateries) to colourful markets and palm-fringed boulevards.

Marché des Féticheurs MARKET
(Fetish Market; 227 20 96; Quartier Akodessewa; admission & guide CFA3000, plus per camera/video CFA5000/
10,000; 8.30am-6pm daily) The Marché des Féticheurs, 4km northeast of the centre, stocks all
the ingredients for traditional fetishes, from porcupine skin to serpent head. It's all a bit
grisly but it's important to remember that a vast majority of Togolese retain animist beliefs
and fetishes are an integral part of local culture. To get there charter a taxi (CFA1000) or a
taxi-moto (motorbike taxi; CFA500).
