might rent sleeping space from a local family. You can also hire local porters if you have
camping gear you'd like to safely lug to the top. There are two campsites located just be-
fore the mountain becomes steep.
It's well worth the four-to-five day adventure; the spectacular summit looks out over
most of West Africa, veiled by soft cool mist.

Outamba-Kilimi National Park
About 300km north of Freetown, Outamba-Kilimi seems like something out of East
Africa rather than a treasure of the west, with its rolling savannah, elephant watering holes
and hippo-trodden rivers. There are nine species of primates here, and there have been
leopard and pygmy hippo sightings.
Sadly much of the park facilities were destroyed during the war, but efforts are under-
way to rebuild. Until then, you can stay in huts on the outskirts of the park for a small fee,
and guides (US$5) can be arranged to accompany you on the trails. Fifteen kilometres to
the south, Kamakwie is the nearest town. You can hire motorbikes (from US$12) or
4WDs (which cost much more) from here to reach the reserve.
