In-Depth Information
( www.cercopan.org ; Mary Slessor Ave; donations appreciated; 9am-5pm) On the other side of town from
the Drill Ranch, Cercopan in the Botanic Gardens works with smaller monkeys such as
guenons and mangabeys. The gardens ( www.irokofoundation.org ) are worth visiting to learn about
the amazing biodiversity of the area.
Sleeping & Eating
For traditional dishes (N500) and palm wine with the locals, head to Atimbo, on the way
to Akpabuyo town. The swish hotel Le Chateau has fine upscale local meals (N3000).
Nsikak Sea Side Hotel HOTEL $
(45 Eden St; r N1000) At 59 years old, this hotel, smack in the middle of colonial Old Calabar,
is a throwback to a different era. It's incredibly dilapidated, and the staff will be pleased to
host foreigners (their clientele is nearly all Nigerian). There's no air-con, and the electri-
city only works when there's national power, but get the top room with a balcony over-
looking the sea and you'll find yourself transported. A very local experience.
Nelbee Executive Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
( 08 723 2684; Dan Achibong St; r from N3500; ) Close to Watt Market is this handy budget
option. Rooms are comfortable, the management is friendly, and there's a terrifically
formal dining room.
Jacaranda Suites HOTEL $$
( 08 723 9666; off Atimbo Rd; r from N12,000; ) Lovely suites, a lively outdoor thatch-
roof bar with secluded cabanas, and a restaurant serving Cross River specialities and
grilled fish, Jacaranda is an easy choice for high-end sleeping and eating.
Marian Hotel HOTEL $$
( 08 722 0233; Old Ikong Rd; r N7000-8000; ) Well located, the Marian has had a lick of
paint and a tidy-up since our last visit, and is all the better for it. Rooms are spacious, tidy
and comfortable.
K's Court AFRICAN $
(74 Ndidan Usang Iso Rd; dishes from N300; 11am-late) An open-air chophouse and bar, this place
gets going later in the day. It serves up fiery bowls of cow-leg soup with plantain, and
once that's gone, pushes back the tables and cranks up the music to dance the weekend
nights away.
