In-Depth Information
February
February is high season and accommodation should be booked well in advance. The
relatively cool, dry weather makes for good hiking and it's the last month where you
would sensibly head into the Sahel or Sahara.
Carnival
West Africa's former Portuguese colonies celebrate Carnival (also spelled Carnaval) with
infectious zeal. Bissau - with its Latin-style street festival with masks, parties and parades
- or Cape Verde are the places to be, while Porto Novo in Benin also gets into the spirit.
It's sometimes in January, sometimes March.
Fêtes des Masques
Held in the villages around Man in western Côte d'Ivoire, the region's most significant
mask festival brings together a great variety of masks and dances from the area.
Fespaco
Africa's premier film festival ( www.fespaco-bf.net ) is held in February and/or March in
Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso in odd years. Cinemas across the city screen African films
with a prestigious awards ceremony.
Argungu Fishing Festival
This fantastic fishing and culture festival takes place on the banks of the Sokoto River in
Nigeria's north. It's celebrated with traditional music performances, sports and a massive
regional market.
