Getting Around
AIR
Royal Air Maroc (RAM; 0890 000800; www.royalairmaroc.com ) dominates the Moroccan airline in-
dustry, with Casablanca as its hub. For most routes, flying is an expensive and inconveni-
ent option compared to road or rail.
BUS
A dense network of buses operates throughout Morocco, with many private companies
competing for business alongside the comfortable and modern buses of the main national
carrier, CTM ( Click here ).
The ONCF ( Click here ) train company runs buses through Supratours to widen its
train network; for example, running connections from Marrekesh to Essaouira. Morocco's
other bus companies are all privately owned and only operate regionally. It's best to book
ahead for CTM and Supratours buses, which are slightly more expensive than those of
other companies.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Taking your own vehicle to Morocco is straightforward. In addition to a vehicle registra-
tion document and an International Driving Permit (many foreign licences, including US
and EU ones, are acceptable), a Green Card is required from the car's insurer. Not all in-
surers cover Morocco.
Renting a car in Morocco isn't cheap, with prices starting at Dh3500 per week or
Dh500 per day for a basic car with unlimited mileage. International rental companies are
well represented; booking in advance online secures the best deals.
In Morocco drive on the right-hand side. On a roundabout, give way to traffic entering
from the right.
LOCAL TRANSPORT
Cities and bigger towns have local petits taxis. They are not permitted to go beyond the
city limits, are licensed to carry up to three passengers and are usually metered. Fares in-
crease by 50% after 8pm.
The old Mercedes vehicles belting along roads and gathered in great flocks near bus
stations are grands taxis (shared taxis), linking towns to their nearest neighbours. Grands
taxis take six cramped passengers and leave when full.
