Lounge lizards chill on hot-pink cushions in the whitewashed court-
yard, and graphic splashes of colour make wood-beamed guest rooms totally mod, though
the rustic showers can be temperamental. Handy for Ville Nouvelle restaurants and shops.

Sister riads: the original is all soaring ceilings, cosy nooks and
graceful archways, while the newer extension across the street is about sprawling beds,
the grand patio and handsome woodwork. A 20-minute walk from the Djemaa, but worth
the discovery.

Earth Café

(2 Derb Zouak, Riad Zitoun el-Kedim; mains around Dh60; 9am-11pm; )
Run by an enthusiastic
Moroccan-Australian, Earth Café claims to be Morocco's first vegetarian/vegan restaur-
ant. The atmosphere is laid-back hippy-chic, and the food fresh and fabulous (we fell in
love with the ricotta-and-squash
bastilla,
a multilayer pastry). Produce comes from the
owner's nearby farm, to which visits can be arranged.
