art deco gems, this 1922 hotel - shaped like a boat - has buckets of neo-Moorish charac-
ter. The grand scale, decorative plaster, spidery wrought iron and eclectic mix of knick-
knacks, pictures and lamps at the front of the house give the Transatlantique a whiff of
colonial-era decadence crossed with '70s retro. It has a lovely outdoor seating area, but
the rooms themselves are a little plain, though comfortable.
Eating
Rue Chaouia, opposite the central market, is the best place for a quick bite, with a line of
rotisseries, stalls and restaurants serving roast chicken, brochettes and sandwiches

institution, this traditional Provençal restaurant and bar has been serving up fruits de mer
(seafood) since it opened in 1958. A humble, family-run place with food that leaves you
smitten.
Sqala Café Maure & Restaurant MOROCCAN $$

in the walls of the sqala (an 18th-century fortified bastion), this lovely restaurant has a
rustic interior and a delightful garden surrounded by flower-draped trellises - a lovely
spot for a Moroccan breakfast or a selection of salads for lunch. Tajines are a speciality.
