MEDITERRANEAN COAST & THE RIF
Bounded by the red crags of the Rif Mountains and the crashing waves of the Mediter-
ranean Sea, northern Morocco's wildly beautiful coastline conceals attractions as diverse as
the cosmopolitan hustle of Tangier, and the superbly relaxing town of Chefchaouen.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Tangier
POP 688,000
Tangier is the product of 1001 currents, including Islam, Berber tribes, colonial masters, a
strategic port location, the Western counterculture and the international jetset. For half of
the 20th century it was under the control of an international council, making it a byword for
licentious behaviour and dodgy dealings.
Some hustlers remain, although the ministrations of the tourist police have greatly re-
duced these stresses. Many travellers simply pass through, but you'll find it a lively, cos-
mopolitan place with an energetic nightlife.
Sights
The Kasbah sits on the highest point of Tangier , behind stout walls.
