With the weather on your side and half a day to spare, you can see most of Monrovia's
major architectural landmarks on foot. Worthwhile historic buildings include the retro
Rivoli Cinema OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Broad St) , which still shows Bollywood movies
(just don't mind the rats running under your feet) and the EJ Roye building OFFLINE MAP
GOOGLE MAP (Ashmun St) , which dominates the skyline and was once home to a spectacu-
lar auditorium. At the First United Methodist Church OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (cnr Gurley &
Ashmun Sts) you might spot Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf attending a Sunday service. The imposing
Masonic Temple OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP (Benson St) overlooks the city at the western end
of Broad St, in the shadow of the abandoned Hotel Ducor OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
this was West Africa's finest hotel in the 1970s, where Idi Amin swam in the pool and
Miriam Makeba sang in the bar.
