Buba
With its calm streets and pretty, tranquil lakes and lagoons, Buba comes as a surprise. You
can bed down at the pleasant Berca do Rio ( 5208020, 6619700; r CFA12,000) , a short walk from
the lake, where Slow Food chef Abdon, who trained in Cotonou, serves up wonderful
three-course meals with wine using innovative, local ingredients. He can also arrange pic-
nics and pirogue trips through the mangroves .
Transporte misto run regularly along the asphalt road from Bissau to Buba (CFA3000,
three hours).

Jemberem & Parque Natural de Cantanhez
The hardest-to-reach places are often the most beautiful, and so it goes with Jemberem.
You'll need a 4WD, time and patience to get here, but if you do, you can stay at the clean
and simple U'Anan Camp ( 6637263, 6060019; d/q CFA15,000/25,000) on the edge of Parque Natural de
Cantanhez , which supports a fully fledged ecotourism project. The camp can arrange forest
treks into the chimp- and elephant-inhabited park.
