, a five-minute cab ride in the direction of the airport.
Here you can pick up everything from fresh cherry tomatoes to oysters to black-and-white
cloth embroidered with the image of Amílcar Cabral.
Orientation
Bissau's main drag is the wide Ave Amílcar Cabral, running between the port and Praça
dos Heróis Nacionais. On the northwestern edge of the centre is the Mercado de Bandim.
From here, Ave de 14 Novembro leads northwest to the main
paragem
(bus and taxi
park), the airport and all inland destinations.
WARNING
Although beautiful, Guinea-Bissau is unstable, and even periods of calm can be followed by violent flare-ups. Al-
though attacks and coup attempts rarely wound civilians or visitors, human rights abuses have been documented.
If the current situation looks calm, however, don't let the chronic instability dissuade you from visiting - people
here will be thrilled to welcome you, and tourism could help get Guinea-Bissau on its feet again. Do note that
shops, banks, businesses and, more rarely, borders may close during tense periods.
