The Kalliste is a Bis-
sau institution, although these days the main draw is the terrace, which is far more atmo-
spheric than the somewhat unloved rooms. Renovations were planned at the time of re-
search, but until then this Corsican-owned hotel is little more than a scruffy fallback op-
tion if you're in need of a centrally located last-minute reservation. There's security, air-
con and wi-fi.

The Coim-
bra has smart, modern rooms decked out with African art and speakers. Climb the steps to
the bougainvillea-fringed terrace or head downstairs into the main building, which houses
a bar, piano room, chess tables and a spa. The restaurant does an excellent lunch and din-
ner buffet with a choice of wines, and the breakfast bar is easily the best in town. Call
ahead for airport pick-up.

Despite its African name, you could be anywhere in the world when you step into the
chain hotel-like lobby of the Malaika. The rooms are smart, stylish and comfortable, with
the usual creature comforts, and there's a bar and ATM downstairs.
