In-Depth Information
Nsamini Guesthouse GUESTHOUSE $
( 027-7316606, 038-2023403; off Navrongo Rd; r without/with bathroom C16/20) A popular choice, this
cute courtyard set-up is one of Bolga's best budget buys. Rooms are clean and Koffi, the
affable owner, will make you feel at home. It's up a lane leading off the Navrongo Rd.
Sands Garden Hotel HOTEL $
( 038-2023464; sandgardenshotel@yahoo.com; off Zuarungu Rd, behind Metro Mass station; r with fan/air-con
C30/50) A very pleasant establishment, with simple but impeccable rooms and very friendly
management. The courtyard restaurant (mains C7 to C15) is one of the more popular in
town. Rates include breakfast.
Black Star Hotel HOTEL $
( 038-2022346; Bazaar Rd; s/d without bathroom C28/36, with bathroom C40/48; ) The prices say
budget, but the hotel definitely feels midrange, with air-con throughout and good facilities
including a bar and an internet cafe. Some of the ground-floor rooms feel a little claustro-
phobic; ask to see a couple before you choose.
Swad Fast Food INTERNATIONAL $
(off Navrongo Rd; mains C10; 11am-9pm) The outdoor terrace is lovely, but if the heat is too
much, you can always retreat to the air-con dining room. The menu is eclectic - Indian,
Chinese, Ghanaian - but excellent overall.
Getting There & Away
Tro-tros to Tamale (C6, three hours) and Paga (C4, 40 minutes) leave from the motor park
off Zuarungu Rd, past the police station.
The STC bus station is 500m south of the centre, on the road to Tamale. There are daily
services to Kumasi (C30, eight hours) and Accra (C44, 12 hours).
PAGA'S CROCODILE PONDS
If you've ever dreamt of a Crocodile Dundee photo opportunity, make a beeline for Paga's Crocodile Ponds
(adult/student C7/6, chicken to feed the croc C5) . The ponds' reptiles, which are held sacred by the locals, are re-
puted to be the friendliest in Africa and, while we're not totally convinced, plenty of visitors do indeed safely
pose with the crocs. Local women even do their laundry in the pond while kids frolic in the water. It is frankly
disarming when you know how dangerous crocodiles can be.
Legend has it that this state of blissful cohabitation goes back to a pact the town's founders made with local
crocodiles not to hurt each other.
