Kokrobite
It seems that Kokrobite has become victim of its own success. Endowed with a long stretch
of white sand just 45 minutes from Accra, it is a favourite of backpackers, volunteers and
Accra weekenders. But a number of travellers have complained about the pollution on the
beach (used as the local toilet), robberies and the poor service at Kokrobite's main hotel, Big
Milly's Backyard ( 0249 999330; www.bigmilly.com ; camping C8, dm C12, d without bathroom & with fan C35,
d/tr with bathroom & air-con C59/79; ) . Still, it remains a good party spot (particularly on Fri-
day and Saturday nights, with live music and barbecue) and a pleasant place to relax with a
beer and the sound of the ocean for a couple of days.
Tro-tros (C1.25, 45 minutes) to Kokrobite go from the western end of Kaneshie motor
park in Accra. A taxi from Accra will cost around C40.

Anomabu
Many travellers rate Anomabu's stunning beaches as second only to those further west, like
Busua and Akwidaa. The sands and ribbons of low-key surf are certainly a big draw, but
the village has its charms too. Former slave fort Fort William is now open to the public. It is
in a bad state of repair, having served as a prison from 1962 to 2000, but fortkeeper Philip's
tours (per person C5) are lively and fascinating.
The town also has a number of posubans (the shrines of the city's Asafo companies, an-
cient fraternities meant to defend the city); Posuban No 6, in the shape of a ship, is one of
the largest. To find it, walk west from Fort William for about 50m towards the yellow
house. When you see Posuban No 7 on your right, turn left down some steps, where you'll
find Posuban No 6. Company No 3's posuban , which features a whale between two lions,
is about 50m from the main road, opposite the Ebeneezer Hotel.
Anomabu Beach Resort ( 033-21291562; www.anomabo.com ; campsites $15, huts with/without air-con US$45/
75; ) is without a doubt the best place to stay here, and has attractive bungalows set with-
in a sandy and shady grove of coconut palms. It tends to be very quiet during the week, and
