spotless, there is a pleasant courtyard and the location is excellent. The one problem is the
extremely noisy generator used during power cuts ( unfortunately still quite frequent).

In theory, Rising
Phoenix ought to rock with its central location and laid-back rasta vibes. In practice,
cleanliness is borderline and the noise from the ocean and the beach bars can be defean-
ing. But as one of Accra's few real budget options, it remains popular.

Asylum Down; dm US$20, s/d US$40/50; )
This newish
hostel ticks all the boxes: clean rooms, good facilities (terrace, hanging-out space, restaur-
ant, internet), friendly staff and a good location. It's not exactly budget, though - the
dorms (with four to eight beds per room) in particular are overpriced. Breakfast is in-
cluded.

The Afia
Beach is all about location: beachfront and central. The rooms and bungalows are simple
but pleasant. Service is a little blasé, a shame considering there are so few hotels in this
price range. Prices include breakfast.
