ACCOMMODATION
Abidjan is expensive and not always good value for money. Elsewhere in the country,
you'll find better deals, but standards of comfort are generally lower.
ACTIVITIES
Several spots on the coast, most notably Assinie and Dagbego, have decent surfing. Côte
d'Ivoire also has a lot to offer birdwatchers, particularly during the (European) winter mi-
gration season from December to March. For hiking, head to Man or the beautiful Parc Na-
tional de Taï.
BOOKS
There is a wealth of books in French about the country's trials and tribulations. Guillaume
Soro's autobiography, Pourquoi Je Suis Devenu Rebelle (Why I Became a Rebel), is a
page-turner. Le Peuple n'Aime pas le Peuple (The People Don't Like the People), by
Kouakou-Gbahi Kouakou, describes the conflict well.
