Man
When you've had your fill of the sun and sand in the south, or the hot winds and dust in the
north, head to the green, green peaks and valleys of Man. Here the air is cooler, the food
lighter and the landscapes muddier: perfect hiking territory.
For local art, check out the Tankari Gallery and Jacky Gallery in the centre of town.
Hôtel Amointrin ( 33-792670; Rte du Lycé e Professionel; r standard/superior CFA14,000/16,000; ) is
probably Man's smartest hotel; the rooms come with hot water and pretty views out over
the mountains. The centrally located Hôtel Leveneur ( 33-791776; Rue de l'Hôtel Leveneur; r
CFA12,000; ) has the dishevelled backpacker thing down pat, though we suspect it's not
deliberate. Less crumpled, clean and with all mod cons is Goulou Marie (
33-784010; Rte du
Lycee; r with air-con from CFA10,000; ) .
Man has a host of decent maquis - Le Boss and Maquis Jardin Bis (Rte du Lycée Professionnel) both
do great attiéké (grated cassava; a slightly bitter couscouslike dish) and brochettes . The Pâ-
tisserie la Brioche (Rue du Commerce; croissants CFA240) is a fine place for breakfast or morning cof-
fee.
You can reach Abidjan by shared taxi (CFA8000) or UTB bus (CFA7000). Taxis for
N'zérékoré in Guinea run via Sipilou.

Around Man
If you're considering scaling Mt Tonkoui, give La Dent de Man (Man's Tooth) a shot first.
Northeast of town, this steep, molar-shaped mountain hits a height of 881m. Allow at least
four hours for the round trip and bring snacks. The hike starts in the village of Zobale , 4km
from Man.
At 1223m, Mt Tonkoui is the second- highest peak in Côte d'Ivoire. The views from the
summit are breathtaking and extend to Liberia and Guinea, even during the dusty harmattan
winds. The route begins about 18km from Man.
