THE WEST COAST
TOP OF CHAPTER
Sassandra & Around
Sassandra, a low-key beach resort in the far-western corner of Côte d'Ivoire, may be a little
dog-eared these days, but there's something endearing - and enduring - here, for travellers
keep going back. Perhaps it's the warm welcome at the gorgeous Best of Africa ( 34-720606;
best@bestofafrica.org; bungalows CFA40,000-60,000; ) resort, 35km east of Sassandra at Dag-
bego. The owners can help arrange trips in the area.
In Sassandra itself, Hôtel le Pollet ( 34-720578; lepollet@hotmail.fr; Rte du Palais de Justice; r/ste
CFA17,000/38,000; ) overlooks the Sassandra River and La Route de la Cuisine (meals from CFA1000)
throws the day's catch on the grill, sometimes including swordfish and barracuda.

San Pédro
Framed by a strip of soft, white sand on one side, and the distant shadows of the fertile Parc
National de Taï ( Click here ) on the other, a stop in San Pedro promises a sweet marriage
of beach life and forest treks. It's also the best place to overnight if you're heading over-
land into Liberia via Tabou and Harper.
Located in the Balmer area of town, Les Jardins d'Ivoire ( 34-713186; Quartier Balmer; r
CFA25,000; ) has a pretty garden, swimming pool and clean, smart rooms. Le Cannelle (
34-710539; r CFA25,000) is a little more lively and has rooms in the same price range.
UTB buses link San Pédro with Abidjan once daily (CFA5000). Shared taxis go west to
the balmy beaches of Grand-Béréby (CFA2500) and east to Sassandra (CFA3000). For Harp-
er, just across the Liberian border, you can take a shared taxi to Tabou (about CFA4000),
then continue on by a combination of road and boat; it's not worth attempting in the rainy
season.
