In-Depth Information
The park entrance is signposted and about 400m off the main highway. Unless you have
your own vehicle, the best way to visit is to hire a vehicle in Maroua (about CFA30,000
per day plus petrol). A 4WD vehicle is recommended.
Accessing the park by public transport is difficult; any bus between Maroua and
Kousséri should be able to drop you off at the park turn-off, but after that you'll be reliant
on hitching a lift into the park itself, which is likely to involve a long wait.
DON'T MISS
EATING WELL IN RHUMSIKI
In Rhumsiki make a beeline for Vegetarian Carnivore (mains CFA2500) , at the entrance to the village. Here
you'll be met by friendly, English-speaking Kodji, who runs one of Cameroon's most innovative and charming
restaurants. All the produce comes from Rhumsiki (much of it from the kitchen garden behind the outdoor eating
area) and is prepared to order whenever guests come. The freshly made bread is the restaurant's calling card, and
the Cameroonian vegetable pizza is superb. As its name suggests, both carnivores and vegetarians are well
catered for, and if you're tired, you can even take a nap in one of the hammocks strung up in the garden, or take a
room (CFA2500) for the night.
Sleeping
Waza can easily be done as a day trip from Maroua if you start early (bring a packed
lunch). Otherwise, there are a few places to stay near the park entrance.
There's (very) basic accommodation in Waza village, just north of the park entrance.
Centre d'Accueil de Waza LODGE $
( 2229 2207; campsites per person CFA3000, r CFA8000) This simple place at the park entrance has
accommodation in no-frills two-person boukarous with shared bathroom facilities. Meals
can be arranged (CFA2000) and there is a small kitchen.
Campement de Waza LODGE $$
( 2229 1646, in Maroua 2229 1646, in Waza 7765 7717; r CFA18,000; ) Perched on a hill amid
smooth boulders are these boukarous, with views that stretch out to the scrub plains and
some lizards thrown in gratis. The huts are comfy, staff helpful and the on-site restaurant
good for sinking a beer post lion-spotting.
