choice in Foumban. Just 200m from the royal palace, it makes for a pleasant change from
the norm in Cameroonian hotels: smart, clean rooms with relatively tasteful decor,
friendly staff and good security. There's a good on-site restaurant (mains CFA2500 to
CFA4000) too.
Rifam Hotel HOTEL $$
( 3348 2878; Rte de Bafoussam; r CFA10,000-25,000; ) Near the bus-agency offices, this hotel is
one of Foumban's plushest. There's a big choice of rooms at various different prices, all of
which have been recently repainted. There's also hot water, a TV set and plenty of space
in each. A good restaurant downstairs makes up for the location, some way from the town
centre.
Getting There & Away
There are a few direct buses to Yaoundé (CFA3500, five hours) and Douala (CFA3500,
six hours); otherwise head for Bafoussam (CFA800 to CFA1000, one hour) and change
there. Bus-agency offices are on the west side of town, about 3km from the Grande
Marché (CFA150 in a shared taxi).
Transport between Foumban and Kumbo (CFA3000, around six hours) runs year-round,
with journey times varying according to the rains. Although the road is very, very poor,
it's easily one of the most beautiful in the country, skirting along the edge of the spectacu-
lar Mbam Massif.
