In-Depth Information
Those in search of something a little more sophisticated should opt for Campement de
l'Éléphant ( 70 17 34 34; www.nahourisafari.com ; Réserve de Nazinga; d/f CFA25,000/35,000; Nov-May;
) , right on the edge of the reserve. Rooms are spacious and clean, but it is the pool
that's the real draw, perfect to while away the hours between wildlife drives. The restaur-
ant also gets the thumbs up from travellers for its impeccable French cuisine.
You will need your own vehicle to access the reserve and go on wildlife drives. The
travel agencies in Ouagadougou ( Click here ) are your best bet.

Tiébélé & Kassena Country
Set in the heart of the green and low-lying Kassena country, Tiébélé, 40km east of Pô on a
dirt track, is famous for its sukhala, colourful windowless traditional houses. Decorated
by women, who work with guinea-fowl feathers, in geometrical patterns of red, black and
white, the houses offer an antidote to the monochrome mudbrick villages found elsewhere
in Burkina Faso.
Association Pour le Développement de Tiébélé ( 70 02 78 26; www.tiebele-developpement.org ; Tiébélé) is
the best organisation to contact for local guides, be it to tour Kassena houses, visit local
markets or organise treks in the area.
Sights & Activities
Cour Royale ARCHITECTURE
(Tiébélé; admission CFA2000; 8am-5.30pm) More than 450 people live in Tiébélé's royal court, a
large compound of typical sukhalas . Children live with their grandparents in eight-shaped
huts, couples in rectangular huts and single people in square ones. Painting is generally
done in February or March, after the harvest. Each drawing (geometrical or illustrative)
has a meaning (fertility, afterlife, wisdom etc).
Nahouri Peak HIKING
(admission CFA1000, local guide CFA500) This cone-shape karst is the tallest structure for miles
around and the steep climb to its summit guarantees 360 degrees of uninterrupted savan-
nah views. Guides from the Association pour le Développement de Tiébélé can organise
sunrise and sunset climbs, a good option both for wow factor and clement temperatures.
