First-time travellers to West Africa may want to consider taking a tour - what you sacrifice in the freedom to go when
and where you want, you gain in having someone else take care of all the logistics (such as visas, dealing with official-
dom, organising transport and accommodation) that can drive independent travellers to distraction.
Two main options are available: inclusive tours (where you fly to your destination and spend two to three weeks in
one or more countries) and overland tours (two- to six-month tours that begin in Europe and travel by land to and
around West Africa). Some overland tours allow you to join for a short section (usually three to five weeks), flying out
and back at either end. In addition to the recommended tours, some specialist travel agents also organise tours, as do nu-
merous West African-based agencies, although with the latter you'll usually need to arrange your own flight into and
out of the region.
