About GLOBALGAP
GLOBALGAP started in 1997 as an initiative of agricultural producers and their
retailer customers belonging to the Euro-Retailer Produce Working Group (Eurep).
It has subsequently evolved into an equal partnership of agribusiness producers and
their retail customers with the mission to develop widely accepted standards and
procedures for the global certification of good agricultural/aquaculture practices
(GAP). The following milestones have been achieved:
The first global conference was held in 1999 (Paris, France), where 17 retailers
decided to introduce independent verification as the basis for supplier compli-
ance.
In 2000 (Barcelona, Spain), GLOBALGAP established the partnership principle
between retailers and producers and presented results of trials with the fruit and
vegetables protocol.
In 2001 (Bologna, Italy), GLOBALGAP announced the first ISO Guide 65
accreditation of a certification body for auditing against the fruit and veg-
etables standard, and the partnership between retailers and producers was
formalised.
