To our knowledge, effects on herbivores following aerial allelobiosis be-
tween undamaged plants of the same species have not previously been
shown. The results indicate that the plant response is a genotype-regulated
phenomenon that is dependent upon the characteristics of both the induc-
ing and responding cultivars. Genetic variations in barley cultivar responses
to weed-produced allelopathic compounds have been demonstrated (Ray
and Hastings 1992).
